Although compared unfavourably by some critics to Jaws when it first appeared, this film is lively, spirited and at times rather frightening light entertainment.
Part-scripted by Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws, and based on another of his sea-going novels, it's again an adventure in which the ocean depths figure prominently, although this time guarding sunken treasure.
Robert Shaw plays a rugged ocean-wise recluse who is also a treasure-hunter - and lighthouse-keeper.
And the personable Eli Wallach scores as an old seadog. The action is plentiful, with undersea excitement and (in a terrifying sequence) a battle with a giant moray eel. There's even an element of voodoo.
