Oliver Reed puts his brutish looks and menacing presence to good effect as the sinister butler of a stately home who aspires to usurp its master, whom he despises. Consequently, he gets up to all sorts of nefarious business in his plans to unseat his degenerate employer (Derek Jacobi). It could have been a real chiller, but the heavy-handed treatment ensures laughs in all the wrong places. The film's title refers to the blue-blooded aristocracy represented by Jacobi and, in view of the orgy and dabblings in black magic that occur, is perhaps better than that of the novel on which the film is based - The Carry-Cot.
