A bizarre and fascinating chiller about an Oxford don (Patrick Mower) getting involved with Imogen Hassall's group of vampire worshippers on the Greek island of Hydra. The atmosphere of evil is persuasive and the cast accomplished, with Patrick Macnee (as a British Embassy man) Peter Cushing (as Mower's domineering colleague) and Edward Woodward (as an expert on vampires) along to keep horror fans happy. The Cyprus locations are beautifully photographed, making up for the muddled script, based on Simon Raven's novel Doctors Wear Scarlet. Filmed in 1970 but unreleased till 1976. Fed-up director Robert Hartford-Davis took his name off the film and it's credited to 'Michael Burrowes'.
