Michael J Pollard, who won his acting spurs as C W Moss in Bonnie and Clyde, grunts and grimaces his way through this dingy little Western about the early days of Billy the Kid, in which grimy shacks and muddy streets brought to a peak Hollywood's obsession with showing it the way it really was. The action, from a knife fight between two prostitutes to Billy's slaying of three mountain men, is horrifically well staged and not for the squeamish. Lee Purcell, as a gambler's girl who becomes Billy's mistress, delivers the film's best performance in this very murky-looking movie.
