Paul Muni, taking the title role of a small-town doctor forced to treat a wounded gangster, here worked for the first time with director William Dieterle, with whom he would subsequently make The Story of Louis Pasteur, The Life of Emile Zola and Juarez. The film was remade in 1939 as King of the Underworld: in a sex-reversal, Kay Francis took the Muni role and Humphrey Bogart was the lead gangster, the part taken here by Barton MacLane. Both versions, though, lack the stature they might have had in view of their casts.
