The famous Robert Taylor-Elizabeth Taylor film, made 30 years ago, will be familiar to many viewers. After such a long time, the subject was obviously due for a remake. This newer version of Sir Walter Scott's classic novel is unusually lavish and spectacular for a made-for-television film, with jousting scenes figuring prominently in the action. The adaptation centres principally on Rebecca (played by Olivia Hussey), the daughter of the Jewish Isaac of York - a good part for James Mason. An attractive feature is the location work, accomplished in Northumberland at Bamburgh and Alnwick castles.
