A black comedy in the Ealing manner, whose sometimes witty script, by Donald Taylor and Robert Hamer, cast Leo (Rumpole of the Bailey) McKern as a university don - thus the title - who proceeds to work his way to a fellowship award by eliminating those who stand in his way, after he discovers a poison that leaves no trace. Maxine Audley is most appealing as his wife, but Janet Munro seems miscast as the don's seductive laboratory assistant. The title of the original novel, by C E Vulliamy, is also fun: 'Don Among the Dead Men'.
