This is is a rarely screened hard-edged gangster thriller that is well directed and boasts a great cast. Lee Marvin is magnificent as a cool Chicago gunman sent to collect $500,000 in unpaid 'rakeoff' money from Kansas big shot Gene Hackman. But he has to be careful as the last messenger sent to get the cash was returned to sender as sausages! The sub-plot involving Sissy Spacek - in her major film debut - as a drugged-up orphan being auctioned off as a sex slave who is rescued by Marvin doesn't distract from the final shoot-out. This is superbly realised, as Marvin battles his way through the bad guy's gunmen, in a vast field of sunflowers, under thunder-filled skies.
