The yarn neatly mixes humour and adventure, as a group of American soldiers (including Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland) decide there's more to World War Two than killing and being killed. Instead they opt to steal 14,000 bars of gold from a bank in Nazi-occupied France. There's plenty of action culminating in a head-on battle between six tanks in a small village in this funny and wonderfully enjoyable tall tale. Mainly filmed in Yugoslavia where the army still had lots of Sherman tanks. Eastwood recorded singing the film's theme song 'Burning Bridges' but, unlike his 'I Talk to the Trees' in Paint Your Wagon, it was never released.
