The commanding presence of Robert Mitchum lends conviction to a brutal jail escape drama which would be difficult to believe but for the fact that it's based on a true story. It's a return to familiar jailbird terrain for director Richard Heffron, who made Peter Fonda's Outlaw Blues. Playing one of the three sons who spring daddy Mitchum from prison is young Eric Stoltz, unrecognisable from his previous, heavily-made-up appearance as Rocky Dennis in Mask.
