Writer-director Preston Sturges, Hollywood's wonder boy of the wartime years, was at the top of his sparkling form with this romantic comedy in which 'clod' Henry Fonda ultimately turns the tables on cardsharps Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Coburn. Fonda's passion for reptiles ('Snakes are my life'), which probably explains his attraction to the sneaky Stanwyck, rivals, for sheer crazy fun, Cary Grant's obsession with bones in Bringing Up Baby. Sturges' breathless pacing steers the capers through to a riotous ending.
