Graham Greene had a hand in the script of this strong pre-war thriller about a man who accidentally kills a blackmailer. It says much for the quality of the script (co-written by director Basil Dean) that players of the quality of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were attracted to star in what is basically a straightforward crime drama. The film however, was said not to have pleased Alexander Korda for some reason and, although it was shot in 1937, it was not released until two years later - and even then not by Korda's London Films but by Columbia. It's based on a play by John Galsworthy called The First and the Last. Some film buffs reckon they can spot an early appearance by Greer Garson in this one.
