Director Glenn Jordan, who made his cinema-film bow with It Only Hurts When I Laugh, earned an Emmy nomination for his decent job on this TV movie version of Victor Hugo's novel of obsessive pursuit in 19th century France. Richard Jordan takes over from Fredric March and Michael Rennie, who appeared in film versions, as the parole-breaking galley-slave relentlessly pursued by the hawk-cruel Javert (Anthony Perkins proving unexpectedly effective in the footsteps of Charles Laughton and Robert Newton). The script adaptation is in the capable hands of the talented John Gay, and a distinguished English cast includes John Gielgud, in one of the best of his later performances, as well as Flora Robson, Celia Johnson and Cyril Cusack.
