The first film version, made in 1940, of this Somerset Maugham story, was one of Bette Davis' greatest triumphs. Here, Lee Remick takes the demanding role of the woman who kills her lover and subsequently faces trial, much of the drama hinging on a certain letter which could incriminate her. Ronald Pickup is featured as a lawyer in the case, and Australian star Jack Thompson makes his mark as her dolt of a husband. Director John Erman went on to remake another classic Hollywood film, A Streetcar Named Desire, with Ann Margret in 1984.
