Lily Tomlin is housewife Pat and, thanks to an overdose of revolutionary new perfume, she's shrinking fast! First she becomes the victim of all kinds of household disasters, then a national celebrity. Universal's colourful sideshoot from its own 1957 classic The Incredible Shrinking Man is, of course, mainly for laughs. The same schoolboy enthusiasm for the project is still there, though, and special effects score neatly as Tomlin shrinks towards nothingness. The entire project has a light touch that never allows sentimentality or drama to put a damper on the fun and Tomlin (who also plays two other roles) proves conclusively that she can carry a film on her own. The jibes at the ad industry are all on target and so is the incidental dialogue. 'Our sex life! ' mutters husband Charles Grodin to his boss (Ned Beatty). 'Don't ask.' Beatty looks faintly disgusted. 'I wasn't going to,' he protests.
