This engaging yarn is something of an in-joke on the film industry. Several stars and directors appear as themselves in a wild story about two would-be film-makers hanging around the Edinburgh Film Festival in search of backers for their improbable adventure film Gulf and Western, set against a background of North Sea oil, which its writer sees `in Aberdeen, with big cars, cowboy hats... hate, murder and revenge'. Alan Bennett scores heavily in one of his rare before-the-camera appearances as an absent-minded doctor.
