Joseph Conrad's magnificent novel of high adventure in the 19th century Far East is translated faithfully to the screen in this film from the hands of writer-director Richard Brooks. The action is fierce and many of the characters are surely just as Conrad must have seen them, particularly Jack Hawkins as the narrator (Marlow), Peter O'Toole as the idealistic Jim (a sort of Lawrence of Cambodia) and James Mason, almost unrecognisable as the treacherous pirate Gentleman Brown.
