This espionage yarn from the bitter pen of John Le Carré is both an adventure story and a clinical portrayal of British Cold War espionage as a world apart, almost outdated in its approach and ideals even when this film was made. Christopher Jones, who recently made a comeback to acting after years away, plays a young Polish refugee sent on a dangerous mission into East Germany. The long training he undergoes is the most entertaining section of a largely disappointing film, with Pia Degermark an inexpressive heroine.
