On its first appearance, this film was not much of a success with the cinema going public and was almost unanimously condemned by the critics as a vastly inferior remake of Marcel Carne's much acclaimed Le Jour se leve. Nevertheless, film fans might well welcome the opportunity to see for themselves whether the caning The Long Night received was fully justified or not.
