A lavish version of the classic Alexandre Dumas story set in 17th-century France. Richard Chamberlain has great fun playing Louis XIV and his unfortunate twin brother, Philippe, and proves he can swash and buckle with the best of them. The supporting cast - particularly Patrick McGoohan as the King's scheming adviser, Fouquet, and Louis Jourdan as D'Artagnan - is excellent and three times Oscar-winning photographer Freddie Young ensures it looks ravishing, even though the story is somewhat scrappy in its early stages. But stick with it - it does improve, particularly in the compelling and dramatic denouement.
