A genuinely different TV movie, involving four students who are obsessed with playing Mazes and Monsters, a variation on such games as Dungeons and Dragons. Inevitably, in the Pequod Caverns near the students' college, the game becomes all too real in some suspenseful sequences towards the close. Based on a best-selling novel by Rona Jaffe (who was also associate producer), the film is intelligently directed by Steven Stern, who helps his young actors create characters, both in fantasy and reality, credible enough to hold our sympathy. There's a formidable quartet of Hollywood stars to portray the students' mothers, in Vera Miles, Louise Sorel, Anne Francis and Susan Strasberg.
