John Savage keeps himself alive in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp with the powerful mental image of his childhood sweetheart Maria (Nastassja Kinski). But when he returns to Pennsylvania and marries her, he finds that he cannot consummate the marriage with his idealised Maria. There's plenty to admire along the way as the subsequent drama is played out: there are good performances from the leads, with Savage in another of his offbeat choices of roles. Ms Kinski, glowingly photographed (by Juan Ruiz Anchia) is stunning, as usual, to watch. Keith Carradine brings a weaselly charm to the part of one of Maria's lovers and Robert Mitchum has a smaller, but telling role as Savage's lecherous father. Atmospheric, superior soap.
