The plot of this range-war Western, prefaced by another of Frankie Laine's bellowing theme songs, is conventional enough. But the fierce performance of Kirk Douglas as the drifter at its centre and the individual style of King Vidor - who made such milestone movies as The Big Parade and Northwest Passage - make it all very watchable. Jeanne Crain isn't too happy as a good/bad girl and loses out all along the line to another of Claire Trevor's feisty, well-worn Western blondes. A good supporting cast of personable Hollywood 'Westerners' includes Richard Boone, Jack Elam, William Campbell, Myron Healey, Roy Barcroft and Paul Birch.
