Jack Lemmon plays a father searching for his missing American writer son (John Shea) who has disappeared in Chile just after the 1973 coup. The relationship between the initially hostile Lemmon and Sissy Spacek as Shea's wife is what holds the film together and both give moving performances. Lemmon in particular blends his own persona with that of the character to produce a study of a not wholly admirable but thoroughly three-dimensional man. An affecting and absorbing film.
