A fairly faithful film version of Doris Lessing's famous futuristic fantasy, set in a London where law and order has collapsed and bands of marauding vandals roam the streets. The central character (Julie Christie in another of her offbeat, latter-day, slightly disoriented ladies) finds she can see through the wall of her flat - to the Victorian world on the other side. Curiouser and curiouser. But will this particular Alice venture through her looking-glass? David Gladwell's treatment of the theme does not always match his ambition; the result remains a fascinating enigma, full of images in which Stephen Dwoskin himself would probably be very interested.
