It's gratifying to see Michelle Pfeiffer in such a low-key offering, even if this drama set against the backdrop of the JFK assassination in 1963 ultimately doesn't quite hang together. She plays a Dallas hairdresser who, despite the objections of her husband (Brian Kerwin), takes off on a bus in order to attend Kennedy's funeral. She soon hooks up with fellow passenger Paul (Dennis Haysbert), a black man travelling with his daughter (Stephanie McFadden). Of course, given the period and location (the South), their deepening relationship is fraught with danger. Director Jonathan Kaplan's other work includes the classic The Accused, so it's all the more strange that the conflict on offer here falls rather flat. Period is well evoked, however, as the characters appear poised for the social changes that were to sweep the country. Pfeiffer (Oscar-nominated) and Haysbert give the script all it's worth, and the film has its heart in the right place.
