Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were originally cast for this comedy-romance but Bogart's illness put paid to Warners' plans and Kirk Douglas and Susan Hayward took over the leads. The story is cut to the rivals-for-a-job-fall-in-love formula: he plays the top-brass army general who gets the prestigious diplomatic job that top magazine publisher Hayward was gunning for. But, being a journalist, our miffed publisher deploys the secret weapon of scandal... In the hands of, say, Cary Grant and Doris Day, the script could have really taken flight, but Douglas and Hayward don't quite have the necessary lightness of touch. Still, there are some neat satirical barbs along the way and Hayward attacks her role with vigour.
