Given that one nation can see as strengths the qualities that another nation might see as weaknesses, that America is as culturally different from Japan as chalk from cheese, and that popular Tom Selleck barges bear-like through his role as a fading baseball player transferred from the US to Japan, we could have had the makings of a marvellously funny culture-clash comedy. Sadly, there's just not enough originality in this formula frolic. And every development is heavily signposted, from Selleck's initial smart Alec stance to his conversion to the human race, thanks to the love of a Japanese girl. Selleck is engaging enough as the head-in-the-clouds hero, but it's not enough to make this little-seen film any more than pleasant fun.
