Mark Harmon, whose own father Tom was a famous American football player, plays baseball-mad youngster Billy Wyatt, whose love of the sport evaporates following the death of his equally-fanatical father, in this strike-out of an emotional drama.
Now wasting his life away with a waitress at a seedy motel, Billy is hit with the news that his childhood girlfriend, lover and soul-mate Katie (another wonderful performance from Jodie Foster) has committed suicide and he has been charged with disposing of the ashes.
As he makes the long journey home, Billy's story is told in flashback from his privileged upbringing through his teenage years to the events that brought about his downfall.
Morbid and predictable stuff: the real problem here is that you don't get close enough to the characters to really care what happens to them.
Harold Ramis, one of the men behind Ghost Busters, co-stars as Billy's best friend.
