A divorced nurse, Susan (Sissy Spacek) offers to foster an HIV positive baby, Annie, abandoned by its mother when she has nowhere else to go. All is fine until Linda (Mary-Louise Parker), the child's natural mother, an AIDS victim, decides she wants custody of Annie. After losing a court battle, Susan's only hope is to sacrifice her personal life to stay with Annie. This is a heartrending film which, although its perspective is initially from Susan's point of view, also shows a sympathetic understanding for Linda. Some points of the story could be speeded up, but it's worth watching - if only for the sad yet uplifting ending.
