Two drag queens and an ageing transsexual bitching their way through the Australian Outback aboard a near-clapped-out bus named Priscilla sounds pretty weird.
But it's wonderfully weird, fabulously flamboyant and deliciously deviant.
After making a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival, Priscilla stormed her way to seven BAFTA nominations and, appropriately, won an Oscar for Best Costumes.
Though the plot is basically one joke, with the outrageous lead characters having to cope with prejudice and derision in a succession of one-track dead-end towns, it is undeniably infectious.
Terence Stamp is a revelation as the former Les Girls showgirl, transsexual Bernadette.
And Guy Pearce is a scream as Adam, the loud-mouthed but fey Sydney muscle boy who is a sensation in sequins and sling-backs, especially when teetering on top of the bus sitting with 50-foot of silver lamé material flowing behind him, and miming to grand opera.
With a series of eye-popping visuals and provocative song and dance routines to Village People, Lena Horne and Abba, Priscilla is a genuine one-off comic event.
Don't miss it!
