Brian Dennehy, that most versatile of America's doughty band of 2nd XI actors, turns in a touching tour de force in this love-tug telemovie. He plays Sam Mercer, a middle-aged architect who appears, on the surface, to be a happily married family man. But fate is about to deliver one of her cruellest blows. He falls in love with feisty new colleague Nell (Jacqueline Bisset). His wife Eliza (played by Blythe Danner, who is Gwyneth Paltrow's mum) takes the news stoically on the chin. But her tolerance is stretched to breaking point when Nell is diagnosed as being terminally ill and he wants to spend the last few months of her life looking after her. Look out for Clint Eastwood's nemesis from Play 'Misty' For Me - Jessica Walter. Very similar in content to the soapy Kirk Douglas vehicle from 1960, Strangers When Me Meet.
