With the passing of Apartheid now part of history, Bopha! has lost some of its impact. Even so, it remains a heartfelt and sincere drama that can still be used as a 'lest we forget' lesson. Danny Glover is the senior black police officer in a quiet township who believes in the white status quo, a belief his son (Maynard Eziashi) doesn't share. Growing unrest in the townships brings De Villiers (Malcolm McDowell), the hard head of the country's Special Branch, into town. What damages the plot is that McDowell is a two-dimensional evil baddie, making the whole story seems more manipulative than perhaps intended. Nevertheless this is an impressive, if flawed, first directorial effort from Oscar-nominated actor Morgan Freeman. The Zulu title translates as 'Arrest! '(SB)
