The characters here look interesting: Matt Dillon is a schizophrenic newly arrived on the streets of New York and Danny Glover the homeless Vietnam veteran who takes him under his wing in this drama about life on the streets. Alas, this proves to be a bizarre, sanitised view of that existence: drugs, alcohol and crime and not addressed and almost every character has a heart of gold. The notable exception to the two-dimensional people on show here is Ving Rhames, who turns in a terrifying portrait of evil as Little Leroy, a thug who terrorises Dillon's character. Elsewhere, bland characters and a script packed with hollow platitudes rule the day. The script has no particular message to impart about the plight of homeless young people, and the central character's schizophrenia is conveniently forgotten about at the mid-point. The idea of Dillon having some sort of holy healing power - hence the film's religious title - is not developed. A genuine disappointment despite good performances from the stars.
