Another hot and steamy thriller from Jim McBride, director of The Big Easy. This one refries elements from The Postman Always Rings Twice and Detour, as sailor Kevin Anderson (who even looks a bit like Detour's star Tom Neal) becomes embroiled in love, lust, double-cross and murder in deepest Mexico. He's a blue-eyed American in an unsullied white suit who finds his life spiralling out of control when he falls into the company of twisted couple-from-Hell Rosanna Arquette and John Lithgow. Arquette, in a further career decline, frolics topless in the surf in a purely gratuitous beachside scene; even so it's one of her better performances and an intriguingly constructed film.
