Supposedly based on a true story, this earnest frontier epic finds star Suzy Amis fighting a lone battle in more ways than one against both the ravages of the Gold Rush and the tedium dripping from a script by director Maggie Greenwald that aims to debunk Western myth but fails completely. Amis is just fine as the woman who disguises herself (somewhat unconvincingly) as a man to survive the rigours of the Old West, but it's a long, hard ride, pardners, through these feminist fields. Ian McKellen is an unlikely co-star and Heather Graham makes oine of her earliest appearances.
