Character actor Brian Dennehy has carved out a highly successful career with a whole series of rough diamond portrayals on both sides of the law. As well as starring, he co-wrote, executive-produced and directed this tough TV movie about Charley Sloan, a lawyer given a chance to get a grip on his drink problem and get his career back on track. It's the sort of role this bull-necked actor can do standing on his head, and he does it well here. Brought in to defend the teenage daughter (Fairuza Balk) of his ex-lover (the ever-reliable Bonnie Bedelia) on a charge of murdering her wealthy father, Charley finds his own competence on trial. Winner of the 1996 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America, this is an intense, involving piece that should have courtroom fans hooked.
