Tense, well-made thriller about honour, guilt, selflessness and other such 'worthy' human traits. The story's pretty simple - two French youths on a back-packing holiday in South East Asia meet a Dutchman (Thom Hoffman) and as they part they give him the left overs of their hashish. Eighteen months later they discover he's been nobbled for drug-trafficking and has been sentenced to death. They can save him if they own up to part ownership of the dope but that would mean prison. Patrick Bruel and Francois Cluzet are good as the wavering Gauls but look out for Kristin Scott-Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral). She plays the Dutchman's ex-girlfriend who is recruited by Amnesty International lawyer Alan Bates (yes, Alan Bates) to act as emotional lever in saving her former chap's neck. Force Majeure, by the way, translates as uncontrollable circumstances.
