Jaded boat owner Lucky Boone (Fred Ward) thinks things are tough when he has to team up with inexperienced Mac (Daniel Jenkins). But then he meets Carlos (Raul Julia), newly arrived in America after spending years in a Cuban prison for his role in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Together, the three men embark on a search for some gold that Carlos buried in Cuba. Carlos also hopes to find the woman he loved before he ended up behind bars. Even though directed by Mike Hodges, purveyor of tough crime dramas from Get Carter to Croupier, this misguided attempt to capitalise on the popularity of such adventures as Romancing the Stone is a hotchpotch. A smattering of romance and some exotic locations don't compensate for a script that has more holes than a rusty sailboat. Crucially, the mismatched characters are too often irritating rather than amusing, although Julia, as always, is eminently watchable.
