Like director Michael Steinberg's and star Eric Stoltz's previous film together, The Waterdance, this is a spasmodically excellent but frustratingly disappointing piece about the heart-searchings of all-American youth. Good ensemble performances here come from Stoltz, Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda and Tim Roth - but there's too much philosophy and not enough narrative drive. Watch out for Bridget Fonda's dad Peter in a gag bit as a motorcycle rider.
