The fourth remake of the original comedy/fantasy made by Walt Disney in 1959. Its loyalty to the original is slightly overdone as it appears to have been made at the same time rather than 35 years later, altogether a rather leaden exercise. The idea of a teenager (Scott Weinger) turning into a talking sheepdog when he is put under a spell by a ring found in his father's museum is interesting enough although the direction fails to recognise this and is, at best, pedestrian. the only point where some sparkle is injected is when Weinger starts growing shaggy hair while watching 'The Curse of the Werewolf', in a packed theatre on his first date. Ed Begley Jr of the Emmy award winning St Elsewhere stars as the father.
