Hindi director Hrishikesh Mukherjee made his name with 'disease-of-the-week' style films that examined the impact of terminal illness on family and friends. This romantic drama is in altogether lighter vein, with Deepti Naval as a lady doctor who has to pretend to be a simple village girl as her lover's father disapproves of professional, English-speaking career women. There's an inevitable happy ending in store after a predictable series of misunderstandings and tight corners. Western viewers will recognise the quizzical features of Saeed Jaffrey in a top supporting role.
