'You know the name, you know the number,' boomed the publicity for the 1995 return for James Bond after a six-year gap. But disappointingly, this 007 adventure is merely a cross between a hi-tech Cold War thriller and Dr No, as Bond must track a deadly satellite weapon that has gone missing. Goldeneye Pierce Brosnan makes a welcome change from dull Timothy Dalton as James Bond and Famke Janssen, as Xenia Onatopp, is a terrific villainess. Sean Bean is a great villain who has dozens of easy chances to shoot Bond dead and, of course, ignores them all and Judi Dench steps into the shoes of M and is perfect.

The Bond franchise has, over the years, suffered a myriad of ups and downs. The ten year period preceeding this film saw 007 reach new levels of absurdity. It was a pleasant surprise to me that this outing was pleasantly enjoyable. Brosnan filled the shoes with authority and 'M's rebirth as a hard nosed lady chief was simply brilliant. Judi Dench is superb. All the right elements are present (with the notable exception of an Aston Martin) and the legend is solidly upheld. Enjoyable.
