Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda are too-good-to-be-true characters in this romantic fantasy, supposedly based on a true story. He's a cop and all-round do-gooder who buys his virago of a wife (Rosie Perez, chewing the scenery for all her life's worth) a ticket in the New York State Lottery. Fonda is a coffee-shop waitress to whom Cage, stuck for a tip, offers half of his lottery ticket. Naturally it wins - or we wouldn't have a story. Cage, true to his saintly character, sticks to his word and his wife is furious. A genuine feel-good effort, the film falls down because it expects that we'll want Cage and Fonda to end up together, but it isn't that easy to root for characters as saccharine-sweet as these. But if you like fairy tales, this one will zing for you.
