Anyone who's seen Desperado or From Dusk Till Dawn will recognise the heavy hand of action specialist Robert Rodriguez behind this cable TV remake of a Fifties teen film. Twanging guitars and an approach reminiscent of Sergio Leone's 'Dollars' Westerns underpin a slow, slow burning yarn about an embittered teenage rebel whose father was run out of town by the nasty local sheriff. David Arquette remains resolutely obnoxious as the sullen, baccy-spittin' Dude who comes alive only when playing his guitar or smooching with gal-pal Salma Hayek (whose American foster-parents are a recent acquisition judging by her heavy Mexican accent). John Hawkes has a rather better time in a role that echoes Sal Mineo's in Rebel Without a Cause: he's the only interesting character in the film. Rodriguez was perhaps unwise to include outtakes at the end, as what he's got in the can is hardly better. There's an extra scene after the credits for those with the stamina.
