The supergun scandal, in which a huge, high-tech gun was destined for Iraq before the Gulf War, caused a political storm in Europe, America and the Middle East. Here is the story of the inventor of the weapon, Dr Gerald Bull, and the secret assistance given to Saddam Hussein in the Iraq/Iran war by Britain and the US. Frank Langella plays the disillusioned and cynical Bull, while Alan Arkin plays the Israeli intelligence chief who, the script implies, murdered the scientist. This is an intriguing story, with the gaps in the facts plausibly filled by an intelligent script. The British and American governments get a mauling which, under the circumstances, they deserve. Langella gives a fine performance as does the ever-reliable Arkin and they are strongly supported by a cast that includes Francesca Annis, Kevin Spacey, Michael Kitchen and James Fox.
