A terrific dark thriller with echoes of the early work by the Coen brothers - strange, as this, too, is made by a fraternal team, the Wachowskis, whose next film was The Matrix. A hot and steamy affair between mobster's mistress Jennifer Tilly and ex-con Gina Gershon leads to the girls planning to lift the $2million in Mafia money being guarded by the Mob's launderer, who also happens to be the bisexual Tilly's paramour. Someone has already paid the ultimate price for attempting to make off with the loot, but the girls' clever scheme to get away with it goes well until Tilly makes an unwise phone call... Lots of dark blood flows in this skilfully interlocking, deliciously amoral tale, mostly shot in a few rooms, but all the more suspenseful for that. Gershon and Tilly are well contrasted, Joe Pantoliano excellent as the money minder and all the Mafiosi carry real menace. A bit long, though, especially towards the end.
