A teenage girl whose mother committed suicide when she was very young searches for the father she never knew in this well made drama. The girl is played by Vanessa Paradis, best known in this country for the excruciating chart hit Joe le Taxi. In France, though, she is a big star and seen as a screen goddess in the making. On the evidence of this film, you can see why. The stunning Paradis plays the pouting femme fatale effectively. Just over halfway through the film she tracks down dear old Dad (Gérard Depardieu) and the film takes a different and somewhat less convincing direction. With her discovery of the fact that Dad is a sad loser, the mood of the film softens. Although Depardieu is good, one does feel he isn't working too hard here. Still, this is a good film and Paradis shows her star potential. Just think, if she could act in English she would already be an international star.
