Another strange offering from American director Hal Hartley, this off-beat comedy thriller takes the well-worn subject of amnesia and weaves it into a surreal tale in which nothing is ever quite what it seems. Filled with quirky humour, the story revolves around a man called Thomas (Martin Donovan) who, bruised, battered and remembering nothing of his previous life, stumbles upon an ex-nun-turned writer of erotica, played by the delightful Isabelle Huppert, whose character is a beguiling mix of self-sufficiency and vulnerability. Equally intriguing is Elina Lowensohn as Sofia, a porn star who claims to be Thomas' wife, and is being followed by two be-suited hoodlums. It's all very weird and puzzling, but it's well worth watching to see how Hartley (who also wrote the script) fits the pieces together.
