Liza Minnelli stars stars in this award-winning tear-jerker about Mary-Lou Weisman, a mother who struggles to make her dying son's life as good as possible. Based on the true story of a boy suffering from muscular dystrophy, this telefilm is a good few notches above the usual weepie-of-the-week and is a triumph for Minnelli. A young Corey Haim also scores highly as Peter, the youngster coping with a debilitating disease. So, no barrel of laughs, admittedly, but a well acted and directed (by Rick Wallace) drama that is well worth watching. What may help it to keep its feet on the ground and the histrionics at bay is the fact that the real-life Mary-Lou Weisman was the film's technical consultant.
